Driver delivers the clutch-your-seats, adrenaline-charged action of a heart-stopping, Hollywood-style car chase, propelling players along a high-speed, all-out thrill ride through the wild streets of four major U.S. cities.
Driver's true-to-life modeling of automobile physics, ultra-realistic environments, cutting-edge graphics and revolutionary replay mode allow users to experience the most elaborate, realistic interactive driving experience imaginable.
The basic premise is this: you're a hotshot young guy or gal who is
pretty good behind the wheel, and must use your driving skill to work
your way up the ranks of organized crime. Of course all of this
underworld-related nastiness is for a good cause, you see - you're an
undercover cop so all the laws broken by your reckless vehicular
control is for a good cause. As you successfully complete missions
you're given even more dangerous assignments and earn the trust and
respect of the local crime bosses. It sure beats sitting behind a desk
eating donuts all day. The basic aim of Driver was always to emulate the look and feel of a
classic car chase through a crowded city, and it's pulled off nicely.
Tearing through a crowded city center with pedestrians running for their
very lives (and before you ask - no, it's not possible to run them over,
sadly) and the cops hot on your tail is a pretty good way to get the
adrenaline pumping. The funky soundtrack takes its cues from the best
and worst of the era's many cop shows and exploitation flicks and,
along with the gritty voice acting, suits the game well. The only problem Driver has is that the whole thing gets old pretty
quickly. After the initial thrills wear off, the missions tend to blur into
one another with no discernible change between them. Driver is a cool
idea, executed well - it just doesn't have enough gas in the tank to go
for the long haul.
